Public Information

The essential role of a public safety agency Public Information Officer (PIO) is to see that accurate, timely and responsible information is provided to the media and the citizens we serve. That link between the line fire department personnel and the members of the working press must be one composed of truth and trust. The public has a right to know what its governmental agencies are doing to properly use their tax dollars and the Wayne Township Fire Department is always prepared to explain to the best of its ability. In many cases, a joint public information sector is maintained by all public safety agencies participating in an event and may include representatives of the private sector.

During events that may pose a danger to the public in general, the PIO is trained to be the calm voice of reason and instruction that shares the necessary, accurate facts in a form that the public can use. The PIO. will also serve as liaison between victims of these situations, the Fire Department Chaplain and others who can serve to help them to weather the difficulty.

All of the Public Information Officers used by the Wayne Township Fire Department have completed extensive training in public speaking, the legal aspects of public record laws and privacy legislation regarding medical records.
