Community Relations/Public Education

The primary focus of the fire service is to reduce injury, death and property loss. The Wayne Township Fire Department addresses this all important portion of its mission through education to all age groups using many methods.

Public educators are experienced members of the Fire Department who train specifically in the different ways to present messages of life safety and property protection.

Partnering with the Metropolitan School District of Wayne Township, Fire Department Public Educators visit the schools in our service area to help present the Basic Aide Technician program. This multi-faceted course teaches children how to avoid injury, demonstrates how to intervene when it is appropriate, escape when necessary and how to use the 9-1-1 emergency telephone system.

Another tool that we use is our Safety Education Trailer. This specially designed and built public education unit on wheels gives us the ability to teach groups of children how to escape a house that is on fire, that fire is a tool and not a toy, what to do during a severe storm and safe practices in the home. The unit is routinely taken to school activities, neighborhood gatherings or any event that where we are invited to participate.

The Water Awareness in Residential Neighborhoods, or WARN program is a cooperative effort among fire departments in the metropolitan area to teach adults and children how to safely enjoy water resources. Most of the newer housing additions will have retention ponds to capture storm runoff not to mention the many lakes, streams and other bodies of water in our service area. Our goal is to prevent drowning and other problems before they occur.

On or near National Fire Prevention Week, the Wayne Township Fire Department presents a major exhibition of its capabilities during the Annual Safety Day. Joining with our other public safety colleagues, citizens are treated to static displays of emergency response vehicles, active demonstrations of our life saving capabilities such as auto extrication and hazardous materials response, the Safety Trailer and many other interesting displays in an outdoor environment where everyone can participate.

Fire Safety Presentations can be prepared to fit any age group. From pre-schools to senior citizens organizations, the message can be structured to be interesting and educational to anyone. Call us at 317-247-8501 and ask for more information.
