The mission of this unit is to effectively reduce the loss of human life and injury, conserve and protect the environment and protect property from the ravages of fire. This is accomplished by quality fire code inspections of buildings, enforcement of state and local laws regarding occupancy of structures, informing the public of good fire prevention practices and educating fire service personnel on building construction and fire extinguishing systems.

The Inspectors of the unit perform the following functions:

  • Inspections of businesses and multiple family dwellings.
  • Plans review of new structures for fire code compliance.
  • Monitoring of buildings under construction.
  • Surveys of under ground and above ground storage tank installation and removal.
  • Assisting organizations in the development of evacuation plans.
  • Inspection of special event sites.
  • Meet with neighborhood associations to monitor and address community needs.
  • Assist the Fire Investigations Unit as needed at the scene of fires.
  • Participate in public education programs to assist Community Relations personnel.
  • Respond to incident scenes to assist Operations Division firefighters that have fire code questions or who have found a possible code violation that requires immediate attention.
