Wayne Township Fire Department provides fire and EMS protection in 36 square miles on the west side of Indianapolis. In 2009, firefighters, paramedics and EMTs responded to more than 11,000 emergency calls.
Wayne Township is crossed by three major interstates as they enter the city. Additionally, the second largest industrial park in Indianapolis finds its home in Wayne Township. Add airport access from the downtown area and a sleeping population of 100,000, and you have the recipe for a large, busy urban fire department.
Chief Gene Konzen and Trustee Andy Harris strive to provide the community well trained emergency responders while ensuring that all of those responders go home to their families every morning.
The fire department and its 203 merit and civilian employees are celebrating their 10th anniversary as a career department this year.
