The Code Enforcement Division inspected over 1400 structures in 2009. There were 18 fires in inspected buildings in 2009. Out of those, 12 were in living spaces of apartment buildings. Causes for the 12 apartment fires included cigarette smoking, cooking, furnace failures, electrical failures, and arson.

Five of the six remaining fires were determined to have been caused by equipment failure. The remaining incident involved a hazardous materials spill in a work area. This incident also occurred in the only business reporting an emergency that had been inspected in 2009. At the time of the incident, the company had not complied with correcting violations found during their inspection.
